While
the SRCPA has come to be associated primarily with Theatre,
the promotion of music has been an integral part of the Centre’s
basic charter. The promotion of Indian Classical Music has
taken different forms over the years.
The
first “Music Circles” began in June 1976. Ten
Sangeet Sabhas involving music performances accompanied
by discussions among musicians and connoisseurs of music
were held between June and November 1976.
In 1979,
the “Music Circles” were started in the form
of monthly performances by artistes. These continued till
1987. During this period, more than 100 performances were
held and deeply appreciated by audiences in Delhi.
In early
2001, SRCPA’s Musical Presentations were restarted
in the form of a mega annual event. The 2001 event was a
joint presentation by the SRCPA, the Confederation of Indian
Industry and the Ravi Shankar Centre for Music and Performing
Arts. Pandit Ravi Shankar and his disciple and daughter,
Anoushka Shankar performed in aid of the victims of the
Gujrat earthquake.
In March
2002, the event was named “Tarang 2002” and
featured Ustad Aashish Khan on the Sarod along with Bikram
Ghosh.
