In 1965, the management of DCM Limited initiated this Kavi Sammelan as an annual event, and held it almost uninterruptedly till 1996. Since 1997, the Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts has taken over the responsibility for organizing the Sammelan.

The Shri Ram Kavi Sammelan is widely acknowledged as one of the most celebrated events of Hindi poetry. It has become a part of the cultural life of the capital and the people of Delhi eagerly await this event. Many of the eminent poets of Hindi literature like Hari Vansh Rai ‘Bachchan’, Shiv Mangal Singh ‘Suman’, Bhavani Prasad Mishra, Ram Dhari Singh ‘Dinkar’, Gopal Prasad Vyas, Vishnu Prabhakar, Sohan Lal Dwivedi, Dr. Jagdish Gupta, Kaifi Azmi, Dr. Gopaldas ‘Neeraj’ have graced the Shri Ram Kavi Sammelan. Simultaneously, the Shri Ram Kavi Sammelan has also followed the tradition of providing opportunity to emerging talent.

In recent years, the Sammelan had the honour of having literateurs like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Ali Sardar Jafri, Mrs. Indra Chowdhari, Prof. Sachhidanandan and Laxmi Mal Singhvi as Chief Guests. The Kavi Sammelan is organized on the 2nd or 3rd Saturday of October every year.
